Seniors (To be a senior in Australia you are 60 or older) can and do fall more often than younger people. How much help do we need as we grow older? A test was conducted in the USA where seniors were asked to get out of bed and walk just over 2 meters and return to bed. Amazingly here are the results:
- 77% were able to complete the test.
- 12% didn’t want to do the test or required some form of assistance
Of those that said they could do the test using a walker or cane for example:
48% required someone’s help or were unable to do the test. Of those saying they were ok completing the test with someone’s help, 24% were still unable to complete the test.
So, let’s look closer at this and how it can or may affect you. If you are living at home alone and help is called for, how will those attending know anything about you except perhaps your name and address? If you need help outdoors the situation could be worse.
